Dr. Sue Calcagni is an Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Catawba College, affiliated with the Center for the Environment and Department of Environment & Sustainability. She teaches a wide variety of science courses while mentoring undergraduate students in STEM disciplines to build the next generation of environmental scientists.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University
- M.S. from the College of the Environment at Western Washington University
- B.S. from Baylor University
As an environmental toxicologist, invertebrate ecologist, and physiologist, Dr. Calcagni's research focuses on understanding ecological systems and environmental contaminants while training future scientists. Her work bridges laboratory research with field studies to address real-world environmental challenges.
Dr. Calcagni has demonstrated leadership through service on the Board of Directors for the Carolinas Society of Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry (CSETAC), including as President, and on watershed organization boards such as the Yadkin Riverkeeper in North Carolina and Soque River Watershed Association in Georgia.
She actively engages with the community through bug identification assistance, public lands exploration, and promoting environmental awareness through activities like hiking, camping, and bug photography.
