Sudipta Sarkar is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management at Anglia Ruskin University's School of Management within the Faculty of Business and Law. He specializes in sustainable tourism and events, with particular expertise in heritage and gastronomy tourism.
His educational background includes a PhD from the prestigious School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He also holds a PGCert in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education) from ARU and is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) from Advance HE.
Sudipta's research interests focus on sustainable mass urban tourism, proximity tourism, gastronomy tourism, experiential learning in tourism & events, and social media applications in tourism. His work emphasizes the intersection of sustainability, technology, and cultural experiences in tourism development, with particular attention to making ecotourism accessible to broader audiences rather than just elite classes.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on sustainable tourism practices, with particular attention to urban ecosystems, gastronomy, and the role of social media in enhancing tourist experiences. Sudipta successfully secured the prestigious BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants SRG 2023 Round as Lead/Principal applicant for his project 'Proximity tourism; investigating its capabilities in decarbonisation, augmenting personal wellbeing and socio-economic revitalization in the UK' with a grant amount of £9,986.20. He also serves as an External Advisor and Academic Examiner for the FdSc Sustainable Tourism Management program at Petroc College (University of Plymouth). His research supervision focuses on topics relating to tourism and hospitality industries, with a particular emphasis on sustainable practices and educational approaches.
With extensive international experience having worked in higher education institutions in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and South Korea prior to his position at ARU, Sudipta brings a global perspective to his research and teaching. His work often connects with practitioners through platforms like the "Good Tourism" blog, where he shares insights on making ecotourism accessible to broader audiences.
