Sudeep Popat

Sudeep Popat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University. He joined Clemson in 2016 as an Assistant Professor and previously held roles at Arizona State University's Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology. His education includes a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside (2010) and a B.E. from Sardar Patel University, India (2006).

Popat’s research focuses on wastewater treatment innovations, including anaerobic digestion for energy recovery, electrochemical methods for nutrient recovery, and wastewater-based epidemiology for pathogen monitoring. His lab explores technologies like anaerobic co-digestion of FOG with sludge and electrochemical peroxide production for urine stabilization. He is also a key contributor to CDC-funded projects modeling disease outbreaks via wastewater data.

Popat has authored over 45 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Water Research and Environmental Science & Technology, securing over $2.5 million in research funding from NSF, CDC, and other agencies. His work bridges environmental engineering with public health, emphasizing sustainable resource recovery and community health surveillance.

Scientific awards include the 2014 ASM Young Investigator Oral Presentation Award and the 2012 Discovery Award from ISMET. His grants and collaborations span academic, governmental, and industrial partners, addressing challenges in wastewater treatment, bioenergy, and pandemic response.

Popat teaches courses like Wastewater Treatment Systems and leads a dynamic research group advancing biotechnology solutions for environmental and public health challenges.
