Subbu Venkatraman is a Professor and Chair of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), College of Engineering. He concurrently serves as Director of the NTU-Northwestern Institute for Nanomedicine and Director of the Ocular Therapeutic Engineering Centre, with over 15 years of prior biomedical R&D experience in the United States including a senior role at Alza Corporation.
His educational background includes:

Professor Venkatraman's research specializes in polymeric biomaterials for medical applications, with primary focus on biodegradable stents, injectable drug delivery systems, and gene therapy. His work pioneers controlled release mechanisms for ocular and cardiovascular systems, alongside cancer treatment using stealth nanoparticles. He is internationally recognized as a leading expert in biodegradable implants and drug delivery innovation, emphasizing translational research from bench to clinical applications.
His scientific accolades include NTU's prestigious Nanyang Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (2011), awarded for breakthroughs in biodegradable occluder devices. He holds 20 issued US patents in biomaterials/drug delivery, five of which have been commercialized into medical products.
He leads multidisciplinary research teams across two major centers, collaborating extensively with clinicians in Singapore and globally. His operational expertise spans GMP manufacturing, animal trials, and regulatory compliance, bridging engineering solutions with clinical medicine.
