Su Yun Woo

Su Yun Woo is a researcher and lecturer affiliated with the University of Zurich and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Zurich (2020), where her dissertation focused on comparative qualitative analysis of participatory budgeting in Chengdu and Wenling, China. Her current research explores deliberative governance, urban governance in China, big data governance, and Chinese foreign policy. She advises the Social Equity and Participation Center NGO on an international project examining the 'Right to the City' in four Asian countries.

Her research interests emphasize democratic innovations in authoritarian contexts, with recent projects including studies on Chinese perceptions of the EU and cadre performance management. She teaches three university courses: 'Political Development in Contemporary China,' 'Urban Governance Challenges in Greater China' (Bachelor's), and 'China’s Rise: Implications for International Relations' (Master's).

Woo recently secured the COST STSM Summer Fellowship to investigate China’s engagement with European research institutions, collaborating with scholars Andrea Braun Střelcová and Mikkel Rønnow Mouritzen. Her work bridges academic research with practical governance challenges in China and transnational policy contexts.
