Yun Zhou is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS). She holds a PhD from Harvard University (2017) and a BA in Urdu Literature from Peking University (2011). Prior to joining Michigan, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Population Studies at Brown University (2017–2019).
Her research focuses on social inequality, state-market-family relations, and gender dynamics through the lens of marriage, reproduction, and family policies. Key interests include fertility trends, reproductive governance, and the political dimensions of population policy in China. She employs mixed-methods approaches, combining statistical analysis, in-depth interviews, and agent-based modeling.
Zhou’s current project examines the consequences of China’s post-one-child policy era, exploring unintended demographic shifts and gendered outcomes. Her work bridges demography, sociology, and policy analysis, with a focus on authoritarian contexts and global comparisons with India.
Her research has been published in top journals and highlights intersections between individual lived experiences and macro-level policy impacts. Despite no explicit mentions of awards, her academic trajectory reflects significant recognition in her field.
