Stynke Castelein is a Professor of Recovery from Severe Mental Illness at the University of Groningen, affiliated with both the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. She leads Lentis Research at Lentis Psychiatric Institute in Groningen and holds roles in several national and international mental health organizations. Her work focuses on clinical, societal, and personal recovery in individuals with severe mental illness, including research on psychosocial interventions, peer support, and lifestyle impacts. She has contributed to national guidelines for schizophrenia and psychosis care standards. Castelein earned her PhD from the University of Groningen (2009) on peer support groups for schizophrenia patients.

Advising & Teams: Supervises four PhD candidates researching recovery narratives, lifestyle interventions, and gender differences in psychosis. Collaborates with international networks like ENMESH and the PHAMOUS cohort study. Her team develops tools for oral health in psychiatric patients and evaluates interventions like mindful yoga for depression.
