Stuart Michael Carroll is a Professor of Early Modern History at the University of York, affiliated with Vanbrugh College and the Department of History. He holds a BA from the University of Bristol and a PhD from the University of London. His research focuses on early modern European history, particularly the history of violence, political culture, and civil society. He has published extensively, including major works such as Blood and Violence in Early Modern France (2006), Cultures of Violence (2007), and Martyrs and Murderers (2009), which won the J. Russell Major Prize in 2011. His current project, The Origins of Civil Society, explores sources in French, German, and Italian contexts.
He has supervised PhD topics on Welsh/Breton historiography and the English Catholic community in Paris. His awards include the Nancy Roelker Prize (twice) and research fellowships. His teaching includes modules on political communities, violence in early modern Europe, and historical methodology.
Research resources at York support extended fieldwork in France, with strong primary source collections. Carroll has led projects funded by the European Commission, such as Feud and Law in Sixteenth-Century Germany (2025–2027) and FRANCOBRIT: The Outbreak of the Wars of Religion (2016–2018). He frequently presents at international conferences and has held roles like Head of Department in History at York.
