John Cooper is a Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of York's Department of History. He holds an MA and DPhil from Oxford, where he studied under notable historians like Steven Gunn and Blair Worden. Before joining York in 2005, he worked on the Tudor desk at the Dictionary of National Biography and taught at Lincoln College, Oxford. His research focuses on 16th-century England's political, religious, and cultural history, with additional interests in early colonial America and Ireland. He contributes to the Times Literary Supplement and delivers public lectures. Cooper is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) and can be contacted at Vanbrugh College V/N/211.
