Stuart K. Allison is the Watson Bartlett Professor of Biology and Conservation at Knox College, where he has been a faculty member since 1997. He serves as Director of the Green Oaks Field Study Center and previously chaired the Department of Biology from 2001-2010. His work focuses on ecological restoration, particularly the restoration and conservation of tallgrass prairies, which represent one of the most endangered ecosystems in Illinois with approximately 99.9% of original prairie having been lost.
Professor Allison earned his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California Berkeley in 1991, following an M.S. from the University of Rhode Island and a B.S. from the University of Puget Sound. His interdisciplinary background in biology, oceanography, and ecology has informed his research approach to understanding plant community recovery following disturbance.
His research primarily investigates how plant communities recover from disturbance, especially human disturbance. At Green Oaks Field Study Center, he studies reconstructed prairies originally initiated in 1954 and conducts a long-term study on tree species demography. He is particularly interested in developing restoration models that meet both ecological and social needs, exploring the ethical dimensions of ecological restoration through publications like 'You can't not choose: Embracing the role of choice in ecological restoration' (2007).
Professor Allison's publication record shows consistent contributions to restoration ecology over three decades, with a focus on prairie restoration, invasive species management, and the philosophical underpinnings of restoration practice. His most significant works include 'Ecological Restoration and Environmental Change' (2012, 2024) and the 'Routledge Handbook of Ecological and Environmental Restoration' (2017), which comprehensively address current practices and future directions in the field.
- Fulbright Scholar Fellowship to study Ecological Restoration, England (2010)
- Coordinating Editor for Restoration Ecology
- Member of Board of Directors, Society for Ecological Restoration
- Active participant in Ecological Society of America and Society for Conservation Biology
Professor Allison is deeply involved in undergraduate education, teaching courses ranging from introductory biology to specialized field courses. His Green Oaks Term provides students with immersive field experiences, connecting classroom learning with practical application in ecological restoration. Through his role as Director of Green Oaks, he oversees numerous research projects where students gain hands-on experience in ecological monitoring and restoration practices.
