معرفی
Professor Stuart Jones is a Professor of Sedimentology in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University and serves as Co-Director of the Durham Energy Institute. He also directs the Centre for Postgraduate Training in Energy. His academic career at Durham spans from Lecturer (2000-2013) to Associate Professor (2013-present) and now Professor (2025-present). Additionally, he has been a Visiting Professor in Clastic Sedimentology at the University of Payme Noor in Iran since 2004.
Stuart Jones is a clastic sedimentologist specializing in continental sedimentology, diagenesis, and reservoir quality prediction. His research focuses on fluvial sedimentology across various tectonic basin settings and climatic regimes, using both subsurface and outcrop data to improve geological models and reduce subsurface risk. Recent work on geopressure and early diagenetic cements in reservoir sandstones has advanced predictions for High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) systems. He leads the GeoPOP research consortium, which investigates overpressure in sedimentary basins with industry funding.
His research expertise spans sediment characterization, geopressure in sedimentary basins, non-marine clastic sedimentology, quantitative fluvial sedimentology, and sediment supply to basins in rift, strike-slip, and foreland settings. His publication record shows a strong focus on reservoir quality prediction, diagenesis, and the impact of overpressure on sandstone preservation.

Professor Jones has supervised numerous PhD students including Joe Brown, Joel Lozano Perez, Krishna Silva, Rachel Kirby, and Sindhura Kalyanam. Since 2001, he has secured over £3.2 million in research funding. He serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Petroleum Science and the Journal of Iberian Geology, and has co-authored seminal textbooks including "Sedimentary Petrology" (4th Edition) with Maurice Tucker and "Introducing Sedimentology" (2nd Edition).
He leads the GeoPOP research consortium, a multi-disciplinary group investigating overpressure in sedimentary basins with hydrocarbon industry funding. His field workshops for major oil companies have focused on syntectonic fluvial systems, alluvial systems, and reservoir quality controls.
