Dr Stuart Jenkins is a Lecturer in Neurobiology at the School of Medicine, Keele University. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Keele University (2013) and completed postdoctoral research in the School of Pharmacy before joining the School of Medicine in 2016. His research focuses on improving preclinical models of neurodegeneration, particularly in screening nanomaterials for regenerative medicine applications. He is affiliated with the Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine (ISTM), contributing to themes in Regenerative Medicine and Therapeutics.
- Education: BSc Computer Science (University of Essex), BSc Biochemistry & Neuroscience (Keele), PhD Biomedical Engineering (Keele)
- Awards: EPSRC E-TERM Fellowship (2013-15), British Neuroscience Association Abstract Award (2012)
Research Interests: Neurodegenerative disease models, glial cell biology (astrocytes, microglia), nanomaterials in biomedical engineering, and translational therapies for neural injuries. He organizes conferences like ATREUM (2017) and coordinates the Brains for Breakfast seminar series.
Publications span neuroinflammation, nanomaterial screening, and neural cell engineering, with recent work on traumatic brain injury models and hypoxic stroke mechanisms. His lab explores magnetic nanoparticle applications for cell transplantation and drug delivery.
- Awards: EPSRC Fellowship, journal cover features, student competition wins
- Grants: EPSRC funding for neuroengineering projects
Labs/Teams: Associated with ISTM’s Regenerative Medicine group; collaborates with Prof Divya Chari and Dr David Morgan. Active in developing nanomaterial bio-screening platforms and educational initiatives like the HEART blog.
