Stuart Hart

Stuart Hart is a Lecturer of Strategy at the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise. He holds a BA from the University of Rochester (General Science), an MFS from Yale University (Environmental Management), and a PhD from the University of Michigan (Planning and Strategy). His career includes founding the Erb Institute’s dual master’s program, leadership roles at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler School and Cornell’s Johnson School (where he remains S.C. Johnson Professor Emeritus), and serving as Distinguished Fellow at the University of Vermont’s Grossman School of Business.

Professor Hart is renowned for pioneering frameworks like the Natural Resource-Based View of the Firm and the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) strategy concept. His 1997 Beyond Greening article (HBR) won the McKinsey Award and launched corporate sustainability as a field. With C.K. Prahalad, he authored the groundbreaking 2002 Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, redefining business opportunities in developing markets.

Hart has published over 100 papers and nine books, including Capitalism at the Crossroads and the 2024 Beyond Shareholder Primacy. His work spans sustainable enterprise, inclusive capitalism, and transforming business education. He advises global corporations like Unilever, Philips, and the World Economic Forum, and has delivered keynotes worldwide on sustainable business strategies.

Recipient of numerous awards including the Moskowitz Prize (2001) and Distinguished Scholar Award (2014), Hart’s research emphasizes aligning business strategy with planetary boundaries and social equity. He co-founded the Sustainable Enterprise Academy and continues advancing next-generation business models for sustainability and equity.
