Stuart Davies is a Research Professor at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute where he serves as Director of the Smithsonian Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO), a worldwide network of 66 large-scale forest research sites spanning 27 countries. His leadership of this extensive network positions him at the forefront of global forest ecology research, focusing on understanding broad-scale patterns in the diversity and dynamics of tropical rainforests across the planet.
Dr. Davies' academic background includes:
- Ph.D. in Ecology from Harvard University (1996)
- B.Sc. in Biological Sciences from the University of Sydney, Australia (1987)
His research program investigates ecological and evolutionary influences on variation in rainforest communities across the tropics, with particular emphasis on understanding how environmental factors constrain tree species distribution and influence growth and mortality rates. This work is fundamental to predicting how global change will affect tropical forest ecosystems. Dr. Davies addresses critical questions about the drivers of forest dynamics on a global scale and the distinction between natural and human-induced causes of forest change. His approach integrates long-term intensive observations with interdisciplinary collaboration to understand the origin and maintenance of forest diversity.
Analysis of Dr. Davies' recent publication record reveals a strong focus on tropical forest dynamics, tree mortality patterns, and global forest observation systems. His work consistently involves large-scale collaborative efforts across multiple international sites, reflecting the global scope of the ForestGEO network he directs. Key research themes include understanding species diversity patterns across environmental gradients, quantifying tree growth and mortality rates, developing standardized protocols for forest monitoring, and examining the impacts of climate change on forest ecosystems worldwide.
Dr. Davies' research has been supported by significant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science through the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment-Tropics initiative, as well as multiple grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation (DEB-1046113 and DEB-1545761). These resources have enabled the expansion and maintenance of the ForestGEO network and associated research activities.
As Director of ForestGEO, Dr. Davies oversees one of the largest forest observation systems in the world, coordinating research activities across six continents. This network brings together key elements needed to address global forest challenges: establishment of permanent site-based forest observation systems, integration of interdisciplinary research teams, partnerships with other institutions concerned with forest futures, and international forest science capacity building programs. The scale and scope of this initiative provide extraordinary opportunities to revolutionize understanding of Earth's most biologically complex forest systems.
