Sean Thomas

Sean Thomas is a Professor at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, Design, & Forestry at the University of Toronto. His research spans temperate, boreal, and tropical forests, focusing on ecological responses to human impacts and innovative restoration techniques.

• Research Themes: Biochar soil amendments, greenhouse gas fluxes (methane, nitrous oxide), and forest restoration in degraded environments.
• Projects: Large-scale Toronto biochar trials on urban street trees, studies on mine tailings remediation, and comparative forest ecology via the 13.5-ha Haliburton Forest mega-plot (collaborative with ForestGEO and Smithsonian Institution).
• Techniques: Empirical modeling, LiDAR, chlorophyll fluorescence, dendrochronology, and eddy covariance flux measurements.

Study Sites: Haliburton Forest (Ontario), Pasoh Forest Reserve (Malaysia), Ituri Forest (Congo), Lawachara National Park (Bangladesh), and urban Toronto.
