Dr. Stuart Beattie is a Reader in Performance Psychology at Bangor University's School of Psychology and Sports Science, where he also serves as Director for the Distance Learning Degree in Performance Psychology. He is an active member of the Institute for the Psychology of Elite Performance (IPEP), collaborating with organizations including the RAF, England and Wales Cricket, Manchester City Football Club, and international entities across Europe and Saudi Arabia. With expertise spanning multiple domains, his work bridges academic research and practical application in high-pressure environments.
Dr. Beattie's research primarily focuses on mental toughness, resilience, and performance psychology across diverse settings. His work examines how individuals maintain high performance standards under pressure, with applications in sports, military training, youth justice services, and educational contexts. He investigates the psychological mechanisms underlying stress responses, confidence dynamics, and personality factors that influence performance outcomes. His research often explores the interplay between psychological attributes and performance behaviors, with particular attention to how training behaviors mediate mental toughness effects.
His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to understanding performance under pressure, with recent work expanding into military training contexts, youth justice interventions, and public speaking anxiety. Dr. Beattie actively supervises PhD students working on resilience and mental toughness projects with organizations including Outlook Expeditions, the Youth Justice Service, Manchester City Football Club, and the NHS. He also supervises research students from diverse professional backgrounds including Opera, Armed Forces, Sport, NHS, and Business on the Performance Psychology degree program. His funded projects include the KESS II PhD with Youth Justice for Gwynedd and Ynys Mon (2017-2023). As Director of the Distance Learning MSc in Performance Psychology, he has mentored students from around the world applying performance psychology principles in their respective fields.
As a core member of the Institute for the Psychology of Elite Performance (IPEP), Dr. Beattie collaborates with fellow performance psychologists to develop and implement evidence-based interventions for elite performers. His applied work spans multiple continents, demonstrating the global relevance of his research on performance under pressure.
