Stipan Jonjic is a distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, where he serves as Chair of the Center for Proteomics since 2006. Previously, he held positions as Professor and Chair of the Department of Histology and Embryology (1996-2006), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (1999-2003), and Full Professor since 1992. His leadership extends to the Center of Excellence for Virus Immunology and Vaccines.
His research focuses on viral immunology, particularly cytomegalovirus pathogenesis, immunoevasion mechanisms, and vaccine development. Jonjic pioneered discoveries in antiviral immune responses, including viral immunoevasion strategies and translational work on recombinant cytomegalovirus vaccine vectors. His recent work emphasizes translational immunology through novel vaccine design.
Analysis of his publication record reveals a consistent focus on cytomegalovirus-host interactions, with major contributions to understanding NK cell regulation, CD8+ T cell responses, and viral immune evasion mechanisms. His work bridges fundamental virology with clinical applications in vaccine development.

As principal investigator, Jonjic secured major grants including EU ERC Advanced Grants and US NIH R01 funding. He has mentored 22 PhD students, several of whom received prestigious awards including Humboldt Fellowships and ERC Starting Grants. His international collaborations span over a dozen institutions across Europe, the US, and Canada, reflecting his embedded position in the global research community.
