Stine Piilgaard Porner Nielsen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Law, Aalborg University, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Her research focuses on social policy, welfare state transformations, and legal consciousness, particularly in contexts involving youth homelessness and marginalized groups. She examines the interplay between legislation, bureaucratic practices, and citizen experiences, emphasizing public encounters and socio-legal systems.
Her work bridges theoretical frameworks like Niklas Luhmann's systems theory with empirical studies on welfare professionals' everyday challenges. She has contributed to debates on digitalization of welfare services and its impact on rights access. Her research often addresses Danish-specific policies while engaging in broader European comparisons.
Key areas of investigation include:
- Social rights mobilization by vulnerable populations
- Interaction dynamics in public administrative settings
- Legal consciousness and awareness among marginalized citizens
- Complexities of welfare state reforms
Nielsen has published over 40 peer-reviewed works since 2013, including edited volumes like Transformations of European Welfare States and Social Rights. She actively engages with media, providing expert commentary on welfare policy controversies such as municipal experiments and pension regulations. She serves as an editor for Onati Socio-Legal Series and participates in major conferences like the Socio-Legal Studies Annual Conference.
