Stijn Vervaet is an Associate Professor at the University of Oslo's Department of Central European and Balkan Studies. His research focuses on Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian literature and culture, cultural memory studies, and the cultural history of the Balkans. He holds a PhD from Ghent University (2007) and has held postdoctoral fellowships at Utrecht University and Ghent University. Vervaet has authored monographs such as "Holocaust, War, and Transnational Memory" (2018) and co-edited volumes like "Post-Yugoslav Constellations" (2016). He leads research projects on imperial legacies and transnational literary networks. Current courses include Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language studies, cultural memory in Central Europe, and cognitive poetics. His work bridges literary analysis with historical and cultural contexts, emphasizing transnational and multilingual dimensions of post-Yugoslav and Balkan cultural production.

Research Interests: His studies explore Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav Holocaust memory, Austro-Hungarian cultural legacies in Bosnia, and the representation of 1990s Yugoslav wars in literature. He investigates how cultural memory is shaped by transnational frameworks and multilingual practices, particularly in contested border regions.
Grants & Projects: Led the 2018-2022 Research Council of Norway-funded project on imperial legacies and transnational literary networks. Active in research groups including Border Readings and Multilingualism in Central Europe.
