Professor Stewart Fallon is an academic at The Australian National University (ANU) within the Research School of Earth Sciences. He holds the roles of Professor and Head of the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory. His expertise spans radiocarbon dating, isotope geochemistry, and paleoclimatology. Fallon trained at the University of San Diego (B.A. and M.S. in Marine Science) and ANU (PhD in Isotope Geochemistry, 2001). He has led major research initiatives, including projects on ocean acidification, Australian lungfish conservation, and abrupt climate change.
Research interests include radiocarbon's role in the carbon cycle, marine environmental proxies, and past climate dynamics. He supervises multiple projects, such as coral reef studies and deep-sea coral archives. Fallon's work integrates advanced instrumentation like AMS and nanoSIMS. His recent studies focus on the Great Barrier Reef's sea-level history and the South Pacific Gyre's variability.
- Key Awards: GSA Kirk Bryan Award (2021)
- Grants/Projects: Principal Investigator for projects on coral reefs, lungfish aging, and glacial history
- Labs: ANU Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory (founded 2006)
Publications highlight innovations in radiocarbon methods, climate reconstructions from coral and foraminifera, and environmental impacts of industrial disasters. His research bridges geology, oceanography, and environmental science to address climate change challenges.
