Kevin Welsh

Dr Kevin Welsh is a Senior Lecturer in Sedimentology and Palaeoclimate at the School of the Environment, Faculty of Science, University of Queensland. He is also an Affiliate of the Centre for Marine Science. His research focuses on understanding past climate and environmental changes through geological records.

Dr Welsh's research interests include:

His specific research projects focus on:

• El Nino-Southern Oscillation (Late Pleistocene and Holocene reconstruction of ENSO using marine invertebrates and terrestrial sediments)
• Holocene sea level histories from the Great Barrier Reef (using corals and microatolls to reconstruct sea level variation)
• Environmental history of coastal dunefields (using OSL dating, sedimentology, and pedogenesis)
• Evolution of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (reconstruction of late Pleistocene dynamics)

Dr Welsh has published numerous articles over the past decade, with research spanning geological time periods from the Eocene to the Holocene. His work often employs advanced dating techniques (U-Th dating, OSL dating) and geochemical analyses to reconstruct past environmental conditions. A significant portion of his research focuses on Australian coastal environments, particularly the Great Barrier Reef and Queensland's coastal dunefields, while also contributing to Antarctic ice sheet research.

Dr Welsh has been involved in multiple significant research grants, including ARC Discovery Projects, UQ Major Equipment and Infrastructure grants, and international collaborations such as the International Ocean Discovery Program.

Dr Welsh is actively supervising PhD students, both as Principal Advisor and Associate Advisor, with research projects focusing on paleoenvironmental reconstruction, coastal dune evolution, and Antarctic environmental changes.
