Professor Timothy Naish is a leading Earth Scientist specializing in paleoclimatology and Antarctic ice sheet dynamics at Victoria University of Wellington's Antarctic Research Centre. With over two decades of experience, he has held significant leadership roles including Director of the Antarctic Research Centre (2013-2017) and Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Science, Engineering, Architecture and Design (2012-2014). His current research focuses on reconstructing past sea-level and ice volume variability to inform future climate projections.
Naish's research interests center on paleoclimatology from glaciated and non-glaciated continental margins, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, and the reconstruction of past sea-level and ice volume changes. His work integrates geological records with numerical modeling to understand ice sheet behavior under different climate states. He has made significant contributions to understanding how Antarctic ice sheets respond to climate change over geological timescales.
His recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a strong focus on Antarctic ice sheet dynamics across multiple timescales, from the Miocene to the present day. His research examines how ice sheets respond to orbital forcing, atmospheric CO2 levels, and oceanic changes, with particular attention to implications for future sea-level rise. Naish's work increasingly connects geological evidence to contemporary climate challenges, especially for New Zealand's coastal communities.
Naish leads the NZ SeaRise Programme and serves as Programme Leader for Ice-Ocean-Atmosphere at Antarctica New Zealand's Antarctic Science Platform. His current major research project, 'Our Changing Coast – Sea-Level Rise on Aotearoa's Dynamic Margin' (2022-2027), addresses critical questions about coastal adaptation in New Zealand. He has been actively involved in science communication, translating complex climate science into actionable knowledge for policymakers and coastal communities.
As an educator, Naish teaches 'Global Change: Earth Processes and History' (ESCI301) and supervises doctoral students on climate adaptation topics. His leadership extends internationally through his role as Group Co-Leader of the Past Antarctic Ice Sheet Dynamics (PAIS) program under the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research.
