Dr. Steven Zech is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Monash University, serving as Deputy Director of the Master of International Relations program. He holds a PhD from the University of Washington (2016), with MA degrees from the University of Washington and San Diego State University, and a BA from UC San Diego. His research focuses on political violence, terrorism, militias, civility, and Latin American politics, with fieldwork in Peru and the Philippines. He led the 'Civic Virtue in Public Life' project (2019-2021) examining incivility in democracies. His award-winning doctoral work analyzed civilian resistance during Peru's internal armed conflict, leading to his current book project on self-defense forces in Peru. Zech has published extensively on topics like counterinsurgency, policy narratives during crises, and the intersection of civility with environmental politics. He received the 2017 TRI Best Dissertation Award and frequently engages media on civility and security issues.
Research spans academic collaboration on nonviolent political change, global terrorism, and militant violence. His work contributes to UN SDGs 16 (Peace, Justice) and 13 (Climate Action). Professional activities include organizing workshops on civilian defense and incivility, and public lectures on contentious politics. He maintains active research ties with institutions like the Josef Korbel School and the Global Peace and Security Centre.
