Steven Turnipseed serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture within Southern Illinois University's Art, Architecture, and Design unit. He has taught architectural design courses at all levels since joining SIU in 2010, bringing 33 years of combined academic and professional experience to the classroom.
His educational background includes a Bachelor of Architecture from Ball State University and a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University. Professional credentials encompass AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, and RID certifications.
Turnipseed's research focuses on educational facility design and small town urban design, directly informed by his 22-year career as a Senior Design Architect at URS Corporation where he created award-winning schools and medical facilities. Current teaching responsibilities include ARC 352: Design IV: Complexity, ARC 552: Grad Design Thesis I, ID 361: Design Programming I, and ID 391: Design III: Context.
Prior to SIU, he taught architecture and urban design for 11 years across Ball State University, The University of Texas at Arlington, and Texas A&M University, establishing a robust foundation in architectural pedagogy before transitioning to professional practice.
