Steven Ratner is the Bruno Simma Collegiate Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School and Director of the Donia Human Rights Center. His research focuses on public international law, including state and corporate duties regarding foreign investment, territorial disputes, armed conflicts, and human rights accountability. He holds a JD from Yale University, MA from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, and AB from Princeton University.
Professor Ratner has served in significant advisory roles including UN expert groups on Cambodia's Khmer Rouge, Sri Lanka's civil war, and Ethiopia. His career includes positions at the US State Department, International Committee of the Red Cross, and State Department's Advisory Committee on International Law.
Research Focus: Intersections of international law with political philosophy, corporate accountability in conflict zones, and mechanisms for justice in post-conflict societies.
Awards include Fulbright Senior Fellowship and membership on the Board of Editors for the American Journal of International Law. He directs the Geneva International Fellows Program and has contributed to international investment law arbitration cases.
