Bruno E. Simma is a Professor of Law at the University of Michigan College of Law, where he taught until the end of 2021. He is also an L. Bates Lea Global Professor of Law within the Law School’s Affiliated Overseas Faculty and has held visiting appointments at European universities. Simma served a nine-year term as a judge at the International Court of Justice and continues to act as a third-party judge/arbitrator in high-profile inter-state and international commercial disputes, including the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, Costa Rica v. Nicaragua (maritime delimitation), and Chile v. Bolivia (Silala dispute).

His research focuses on public international law, human rights, and global governance, with notable contributions to the Commentary on the Charter of the United Nations and the textbook Universelles Völkerrecht. His accolades include the Manley O. Hudson Medal, the highest honor from the American Society of International Law, and multiple honorary degrees.
