Professor Peter Malanczuk is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Hong Kong and serves on several international legal advisory bodies. He previously held prominent academic roles, including Dean of the School of Law at City University of Hong Kong (2004–2007) and C.V. Starr Professor of Law at Peking University School of Transnational Law (2008–2014). He is a German national with extensive international legal expertise, having worked in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Hong Kong, and China.
Education: Studied law in Göttingen, München, and Heidelberg (state exams 1973 and 1976 with distinction), and earned a PhD (Dr. jur., summa cum laude) from the University of Giessen in 1976.
Research interests focus on international law, arbitration, and conflict resolution, with notable contributions to international legal frameworks, UN compensation mechanisms, and transnational legal governance.
Professional roles include:
- Member of Heidelberg University’s Academic Advisory Council (since 2009)
- Chairman of the Strategy and Rules Committee, Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration
- Director of the South China International Arbitration Center in Hong Kong (Chairman of Rules-Making Committee)
- Member of China Supreme People’s Court’s International Commercial Expert Committee
Notable achievements include serving as Legal Counsel for Iraq during the 1990 Gulf War and Ethiopia during the Eritrea-Ethiopia conflict, as well as roles at the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.
Awards include his PhD summa cum laude and recognition for academic excellence in legal studies.
