Steven Radelet is the Donald F. McHenry Chair in Global Human Development and Distinguished Professor of the Practice at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where he directs the Global Human Development Program. His research focuses on economic growth, foreign aid, debt management, and financial crises in Africa and Asia. He previously served as USAID’s Chief Economist, Senior Adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, and economic advisor to Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Malawian President Joyce Banda. His honors include Liberia’s Knight Officer Knighthood (2017) and the Royal Economic Society Prize (2012) for groundbreaking work on aid timing and growth.
Education: Ph.D. and MPP from Harvard University (Economics & Public Policy), B.A. in Mathematics from Central Michigan University. He co-authored influential books like The Great Surge and Emerging Africa, and pioneered research on foreign aid effectiveness and development trends. His work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to global challenges.
Key contributions include analyzing the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s impact, advising post-conflict nations, and promoting transparent aid policies. His academic output spans over 150 articles, with recent work addressing theory-practice gaps in international relations and environmental policy.
