Steven Block is a Professor of International Economics at Tufts University, holding joint appointments at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. He specializes in development economics with a focus on agricultural policy, political economy, and economic growth in developing countries.
Block earned his PhD in Political Economy from Harvard University (1993), an MPP (1984), and a BA in History from Brandeis University (1980). His research examines food security, climate impacts on agriculture, and the political economy of policy reforms in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recent work includes studies on nutritious diet affordability, climate shocks and child nutrition, and the relationship between poverty reduction and nutrition outcomes.
He has authored/co-authored over 40 publications, including a leading textbook The Economics of Development. Grants include funding from the Charles Koch Foundation (2017–2023) and the Energy Foundation (2014–2015). Teaching responsibilities include courses on development economics, political economy, and agricultural policy.
Block previously served as Academic Dean of The Fletcher School (2015–2020) and is affiliated with multiple research initiatives addressing global food systems and economic development challenges.
