Dr. Steven R. Harmon is a Professor of Historical Theology at Gardner-Webb University's School of Divinity, where he has taught since 2010. He previously held positions as Associate Professor at Campbell University Divinity School and Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School, and served as Visiting Professor at Duke University Divinity School and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. His teaching focuses on Christian History and Theology, Ethics, and Ecumenical Studies.
Education: B.A. (Howard Payne University), M.Div. and Ph.D. (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary), with additional studies at Catholic University of America, Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität (Münster, Germany), University of Dallas, and Duke University Divinity School.
Research Interests: Dr. Harmon specializes in early Christian universal salvation doctrines, Baptist identity and ecumenism, and theological tradition. He emphasizes Baptist Catholicity and interfaith dialogue, having authored books such as Every Knee Should Bow and Baptist Identity and the Ecumenical Future. He contributes to journals like Pacific Journal of Baptist Research and serves on editorial boards for ecumenical theological publications.
Ecumenical Engagement: Active in the Baptist World Alliance’s Commission on Doctrine and Christian Unity, he participates in dialogues with Anglican, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox churches via the World Council of Churches. Pastoral Experience: Former pastor of three Texas churches, interim pastor in North Carolina, and frequent guest preacher across multiple states.
Personal: Married to Kheresa Wedding Harmon (Minister for Children at St. John’s Baptist Church), father of a high school son. Hobbies include running, music (electric guitar, French horn, alto recorder), and travel.
