Curtis W. Freeman is a Research Professor of Theology and Baptist Studies at Duke University’s Divinity School. He also serves as the Ruth D. Duncan Director of the Baptist House of Studies. His work focuses on Free Church theology, religious dissent, and Baptist traditions, with notable contributions to ecumenical dialogue and historical theology.
Freeman holds a Ph.D. from Baylor University (1990), an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1980), and a B.A. from Baylor University (1977). His research explores intersections between Baptist theology, church history, and ecumenical relations.
Recent publications include Pilgrim Letters (2021) and Pilgrim Journey (2023), which provide theological instruction rooted in Christian basics and gospel mysteries. His scholarship emphasizes renewal in Baptist theology through engagement with broader ecclesiological frameworks.
Freeman’s media engagements include commentary on ecumenical topics like interfaith communion and Pope Francis’s references to Martin Luther King Jr. He has directed the Baptist House of Studies since 2020, fostering scholarship on Baptist identity and history.
