Dr. Steven R. Browning is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Environmental Health at the University of Kentucky's College of Public Health. He also serves as Assistant Director of the Central Appalachian Regional Education and Research Center and Associate Faculty in the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center. His academic roles include directing graduate studies in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Health Service Research.
Education: PhD in Epidemiology (University of North Carolina, 1994), MS in Biostatistics (UNC, 1989), and BS in Mathematics (University of Utah, 1986).
Research Interests: Occupational, injury, and environmental epidemiology with a focus on agricultural health, respiratory disease in Appalachia, and pesticide exposure impacts. Notable projects include community-based studies on respiratory health disparities, atrazine exposure effects, and farm worker safety. He has secured federal grants from NIEHS, NIOSH, and the COPD Foundation.
Publications: Over 65 peer-reviewed articles, including studies on lung health outcomes in Appalachian women, roadway density and asthma, and cohort analyses. His work emphasizes participatory research and addressing rural health inequities.
Awards: Recipient of the 2025 Elbert 'AI' Austin Career Achievement Award for contributions to occupational and public health.
Grants & Advising: PI/co-PI on 42+ grants, including NIOSH-funded studies on farm injuries and environmental exposures. Advised over 150 graduate students in epidemiology and public health. Active in interdisciplinary collaborations across nursing, medicine, and environmental science.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Mountain Air Project (MAP), a community-engaged initiative addressing respiratory health in rural Kentucky. Collaborates with UK colleagues on projects like the Southeast Center for Agricultural Health.
