Steven Pollard is a Professor of Stem Cell and Cancer Biology at the University of Edinburgh, leading the Centre for Regenerative Medicine and co-directing the Edinburgh-Glasgow BTR Scottish Brain Cancer Centre of Excellence. He is also the Associate Director of the Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre and founder of Trogenix Ltd, a biotech spinout focused on glioblastoma therapies.
His research centers on neural stem cells and their role in brain cancer, particularly glioblastoma. Key areas include:
- Lineage-specific transcription factors (SOX, FOX, bHLH) in self-renewal and differentiation
- Chemical and genetic screening for agents modulating stem cell fate
- Epigenetic reprogramming to suppress malignancy
- CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing in human/mouse neural stem cells
His recent work spans epigenetic immunoediting for glioblastoma immune evasion (2021, Cell), ILK/STAT3 pathways in tumor stem cell plasticity (2024, Developmental Cell), and FOXM1 inhibitors for glioblastoma treatment (2023, Cell Reports). Collaborations include institutions like CRUK LRI, Francis Crick Institute, and University of Edinburgh.
Scientific awards include Cancer Research UK Senior Research Fellow (2014–2019), Beit Memorial Fellow, and Kaye Fellow. He serves on advisory boards for Brain Tumour Research and The Brain Tumour Charity. His lab trains PhD students like Zeyu Wang and Rosie Willis, with past advisees including Benjamin Southgate and Erika Lo.
