Steven L. Miller is a Professor in the Department of Botany at the University of Wyoming, affiliated with the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources. His specialization lies in Fungal Ecology and Symbiosis, focusing on ectomycorrhizal fungi and their roles in terrestrial ecosystems. He holds a B.S. (1979), M.S. (1982), and Ph.D. (1985) from the University of Wyoming and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, respectively.
His research emphasizes the ecological and symbiotic relationships of ectomycorrhizal fungi, including projects on conifer-fungal symbiosis, phylogeography of Russula brevipes, fairy ring ecology, and fungal communities in threatened forests. His work bridges field studies and molecular approaches to understand fungal biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as Plants and Civilization, Symbiosis, and Biology of Plants and Fungi. His publications span topics like fire ecology, fungal taxonomy, and genetic diversity, contributing to global understanding of fungal systems in diverse environments.
Miller's research has explored regions from Crater Lake National Park to the Western Ghats and Guyana, highlighting both local and global ecological contexts. His work underscores the importance of mycorrhizal fungi in forest health and conservation.
