Dr. Steven J. Fishman is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and a leading researcher in vascular anomalies at Boston Children's Hospital. With over three decades of clinical and research experience, he has established himself as a prominent figure in pediatric vascular surgery and the management of complex vascular malformations. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications to improve outcomes for children with vascular anomalies.
Education:
- Medical School: Northwestern University Medical School (1986)
- Internship: Hospital of University of Pennsylvania (1987)
- Residency: Hospital of University of Pennsylvania (1992)
- Fellowship: Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1990)
- Fellowship: Pediatric Surgery, Boston Children's Hospital (1994)
Dr. Fishman's research focuses on three primary areas: developing permanent treatments for vascular malformations through tissue engineering and angiogenesis inhibition; clarifying subtypes of pediatric liver hemangiomas to optimize management; and developing mechanisms to enlarge short segments of esophagus and intestine. His work addresses critical clinical challenges where current treatments often fail due to recanalization, recurrence, or inadequate tissue replacement. His innovative approaches aim to transform care for children with vascular anomalies and congenital defects.
Analysis of Dr. Fishman's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the molecular and genetic underpinnings of vascular anomalies, with increasing emphasis on genotype-phenotype correlations and precision medicine approaches. His work spans basic science investigations of molecular pathways, detailed clinical characterization of rare vascular conditions, and development of novel surgical and interventional techniques. The research demonstrates an evolving trajectory from descriptive clinical studies toward mechanistic understanding and targeted therapeutic development.
Dr. Fishman has made substantial contributions to the field through his leadership in developing classification systems and clinical practice guidelines for vascular anomalies. His work has shaped contemporary understanding and management of complex vascular conditions in children, particularly in the areas of liver hemangiomas and lymphatic anomalies.
Throughout his career, Dr. Fishman has mentored numerous surgical trainees and collaborated extensively with multidisciplinary teams to advance the field of vascular anomalies. His research program has been supported by institutional funding and collaborative grants that have enabled comprehensive studies of rare vascular conditions through multi-institutional registries and clinical investigations. His laboratory work on tissue engineering approaches to vascular obliteration represents a significant translational research effort bridging basic science and clinical application.
Dr. Fishman leads a dedicated research team focused on vascular anomalies at Boston Children's Hospital, working closely with colleagues in pathology, genetics, interventional radiology, and dermatology to advance understanding and treatment of these complex conditions. His laboratory investigations complement clinical research efforts to develop permanent solutions for vascular malformations that currently require repeated interventions.
