Steven J. Burian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, an M.S. in Environmental Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Alabama. He is a registered professional engineer in Utah and serves as Associate Director of the Global Change and Sustainability Center and Co-Director of Sustainability Curriculum Development at the University of Utah.
His research focuses on sustainable urban water resource systems, including stormwater management, green infrastructure design, flood modeling, and climate adaptation strategies. Funded by NSF, EPA, DOD, and others, his work integrates engineering and sustainability to address urban water challenges. He has authored 50+ peer-reviewed publications and developed software tools used globally.
Dr. Burian teaches courses in Hydrology, Hydraulics, Watershed Modeling, and Sustainability. He employs project-based learning and mentors new faculty through the ASCE ExCEEd Teaching Workshop. He co-founded an engineering consulting firm and leads interdisciplinary initiatives, including developing Utah's first Undergraduate Sustainability Certificate.
