معرفی
Thomas P. Ballestero is an Associate Professor and Director of the UNH Stormwater Center at the University of New Hampshire's College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. His affiliations include the Civil and Environmental Engineering and Ocean Engineering departments. He holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University (1981), an M.S. from Pennsylvania State University (1977), and a B.S. from the same institution (1975).
- Education: PhD Civil Engineering (Colorado State University), MS and BS in Civil Engineering (Penn State).
Research Interests
His work focuses on applied water resources engineering, including stormwater management, stream restoration, groundwater hydrology, and environmental remediation. He leads the UNH Stormwater Center, studying green infrastructure and low-impact development (LID) systems. His research also addresses hydraulic fracturing impacts, international water resources projects, and climate adaptation strategies.
Key Contributions
Dr. Ballestero has pioneered studies on porous pavements, subsurface gravel wetlands, and the performance of stormwater control measures. His international projects include groundwater development in Brazil, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, as well as stream restoration in Argentina and the U.S. He has advised on hydraulic fracturing risks and served on federal panels like the EPA's Hydraulic Fracturing Review.
Awards & Recognition
- 2016 ASCE/EWRI Water Visionary Award
- 2015 Meritorious Service Award (New England APWA)
- Multiple Fulbright Scholar awards (1991, 1992)
- University of New Hampshire Outstanding Teaching Awards (1991, 1988)
Grants & Collaborations
He directs the NH Water Resources Research Center (1986–1999) and has led over 80 technical projects. His collaborations include the U.S. EPA, FEMA, and international agencies like the UN's IAEA. Current projects involve living shorelines, climate-resilient infrastructure, and contaminant transport modeling.
Labs & Teams
He oversees the UNH Stormwater Center, a $1M+ annual research hub evaluating stormwater technologies. The center's work informs EPA guidelines and urban sustainability practices nationwide.
