Dr. Jose G. Vasconcelos is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Auburn University, where he leads research in unsteady multiphase flows, urban water systems, and computational hydraulics. He has held editorial and leadership roles in ASCE-EWRI and serves as a Senior Editor for the Journal of Water Management and Modeling.
His research focuses on air-water interactions, geysering, stormwater hydraulics, pressure transients, and numerical modeling of urban drainage systems. He uses tools such as SWMM, GSSHA, and CFD to study complex flow behaviors in stormwater tunnels, manholes, and pipelines. His work combines experimental, field, and computational approaches.
His recent publications (2023–2025) reflect a strong trend in transient stormwater flows, green infrastructure, model validation, and coastal infrastructure resilience. He investigates curve number methods, low-impact development, and multiphase flow dynamics under climate change scenarios.
- Outstanding Faculty of the Year, Auburn University (2025)
- Outstanding Reviewer, ASCE Journal of Hydrological Engineering (2024)
- Outstanding Associate Editor, ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (2022)
- Telford Premium, Institution of Civil Engineers (2018)
- James M. Robbins Teaching Award, Chi Epsilon (2014)
Dr. Vasconcelos mentors numerous graduate students and has led projects on stormwater modeling, sediment basins, and infrastructure resilience. He is actively involved in Engineers Without Borders and serves on multiple editorial boards. His research group conducts lab and field experiments on geysering, manhole cover displacement, and tunnel hydraulics.
