Steven G. Medema is the George Family Research Professor of Economics at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He also serves as Associate Director of the Center for the History of Political Economy and a Research Associate in Duke’s School of Law. Previously, he held roles at the University of Colorado Denver, including University Distinguished Professor of Economics and Director of the University Honors and Leadership Program. Medema earned his B.A. from Calvin College (1985) and Ph.D. from Michigan State University (1989).
His research focuses on the history of twentieth-century economics, emphasizing the interplay between markets and government. Notable works include The Hesitant Hand (2009), which won the ESHET Book Prize, and The Economics Book (2019), a comprehensive history of economic thought. Current projects include a book on the Coase Theorem, supported by NEH and INET grants.
Medema has authored over 100 publications and edited volumes. He served as Editor of the Journal of the History of Economic Thought (1999–2008) and currently leads the Oxford Studies in the History of Economics series. Awards include the 2010 ESHET Prize and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. His grants include funding for research on the Coase Theorem's legal implications.
