Steven Fischer is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Applied Research, Partnerships and Outreach at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on occupational biomechanics, ergonomics, and musculoskeletal disorder prevention, particularly in high-demand professions such as paramedicine and military roles. His work emphasizes biomechanical exposure analysis, ergonomic intervention design, and the development of physical employment standards.
Key areas of research include paramedic physical demands, workplace safety optimization, and the application of digital human modeling. He leads the Occupational Biomechanics and Ergonomics Lab, advancing tools like the Ottawa Paramedic Physical Ability Test (OPPAT) and exploring machine learning approaches for ergonomic risk assessment.
Recent articles highlight studies on fatigue effects in lifting tasks, movement variability in ergonomic assessments, and the design of wearable technologies to mitigate musculoskeletal risks. His work bridges biomechanical science with practical applications in healthcare and military settings.
Scientific contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed publications, with a focus on biomechanical modeling, workplace safety, and paramedic workforce health. He actively collaborates with industry partners to translate research into actionable ergonomic solutions.
