Steven F. Lewis, Ph.D. is a Professor of Population Health at Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, where he has served since 2016. Previously, he was a Visiting Professor at the same institution (2014-2016), Professor of Physiology at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences-St. Kitts (2011-2013), and Professor of Physiology at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (2009-2010). His extensive academic career includes positions at Boston University, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, and research collaborations with MIT, Massachusetts General Hospital, and international institutions including University of Copenhagen and Linköping University Hospital.
Dr. Lewis received his B.S. from Brooklyn College (1970), M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College (1971), and Ph.D. in physiology from Stanford University (1977). He completed post-doctoral fellowships at University of Copenhagen and University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. His international research profile includes work with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA, where he served as a National Research Council Senior Research Associate.
Internationally recognized for his research on human muscle fatigue and physical performance in health and disease, Dr. Lewis's work bridges exercise physiology, metabolic disorders, and clinical applications. His research has consistently focused on understanding the physiological mechanisms that limit exercise performance in various disease states, particularly metabolic myopathies. His scholarly activity reveals a strong emphasis on translating basic physiological principles into clinical understanding of exercise limitations.
Analysis of Dr. Lewis's publication record shows a consistent trajectory in muscle physiology research, with particular expertise in metabolic disorders affecting exercise performance. His work spans fundamental biochemical processes in muscle metabolism to clinical applications in patient populations with specific enzyme deficiencies. The research demonstrates sophisticated integration of physiological measurements during exercise with underlying metabolic pathways.
