Joseph A Houmard is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology within the College of Health and Human Performance at East Carolina University. His research program focuses on the intersection of exercise physiology, obesity, and metabolic disorders, with particular expertise in skeletal muscle metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and the developmental programming effects of maternal exercise.
Houmard's research interests span multiple domains of metabolic health, with emphasis on how exercise interventions impact obesity-related metabolic disorders. His work investigates skeletal muscle adaptations to exercise in obesity and type 2 diabetes, examining mitochondrial function, lipid metabolism, and insulin signaling pathways. More recently, his research has expanded into developmental programming, exploring how maternal exercise during pregnancy influences infant metabolism and long-term metabolic health outcomes. His laboratory employs primary human myotube models alongside clinical interventions to dissect molecular mechanisms underlying exercise benefits.

Houmard has secured substantial research funding throughout his career, primarily from NIH/NIDDK, with numerous projects investigating lipid metabolism in obesity, exercise, and weight loss spanning from 1996 to present. He serves as Principal Investigator on the Molecular Transducers of the Health Benefits of Exercise Intensity and Mode project with Duke University (2019-2025) and Investigating the effects of aerobic and resistance training in vivo on skeletal muscle metabolism in vitro in primary human muscle cells (2019-2026). His service includes chairing NIH study sections and reviewing for tenure/promotion committees at other institutions.
Houmard directs research in the Human Performance Laboratory in Ward Building at East Carolina University. His work is integrated with the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC), a large-scale NIH initiative to map the molecular responses to exercise. His laboratory specializes in primary human myotube culture techniques to study skeletal muscle metabolism ex vivo, complemented by clinical exercise interventions examining both acute and chronic adaptations to physical activity.
