Steven Ellis is a Professor of Classics and Roman Archaeology at the University of Cincinnati, specializing in ancient cities and urban life. His career spans fieldwork across Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Morocco, and Algeria, with leadership roles in multiple excavation projects including the Pompeii Archaeological Research Project: Porta Stabia, the Tharros Archaeological Research Project, the Pompeii Quadriporticus Project (co-directed with Eric Poehler), and the East Isthmia Archaeological Project (co-directed with Timothy Gregory).
- Education: PhD in Classical Archaeology from the University of Sydney (2005)
His research encompasses Roman retail spaces, urban waste management, superstitions, coins, site formation processes, sacred infrastructure, and social hierarchies, particularly urban sub-elites. He has pioneered the application of new technologies in archaeological fieldwork, including digital documentation methods and isotopic analysis for dietary reconstruction. His publications include the edited volume The Making of Pompeii (2011), The Roman Retail Revolution (2018), and the recent Porta Stabia Neighborhood at Pompeii (2023, co-authored).
Steven’s work is supported by major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, Loeb Classical Library Foundation, National Geographic, and the Rome Prize. His upcoming publications will expand on the Pompeii series and Tharros excavations. Notable awards include the Rome Prize and multiple fellowships.
