Steven Eckels is a Professor and Department Head of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Kansas State University, holding the Steven M. and Kay L. Theede Chair in Engineering. He directs the Institute for Environmental Research, focusing on human-environment interactions and sustainable systems. His academic journey includes a B.S. from Dordt College (1988) and M.S./Ph.D. from Iowa State University (1991/1993).
- B.S. Mechanical Engineering – Dordt College, 1988
- M.S. Mechanical Engineering – Iowa State University, 1991
- Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering – Iowa State University, 1993
Research interests span multi-phase flows, thermal modeling of the human body, HVAC system efficiency, particulate matter control, and biocontainment systems. He pioneered the Two-Phase Heat Transfer Laboratory and developed thermal manikin technologies for clothing and building systems analysis. His work on low-GWP refrigerants and sonic multi-phase thermodynamic cycles advances sustainable cooling solutions.
Dr. Eckels has authored 69 peer-reviewed publications, holds an H-Index of 15, and advised 6 Ph.D. and 18 M.S. students. He is a leader in ASHRAE, SAE, and ASME, contributing to technical committees and standards like ASHRAE 52.2. His awards highlight both research and teaching excellence, including the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award and multiple teaching accolades.
- Labs: Two-Phase Heat Transfer Lab, Institute for Environmental Research
- Key Projects: Thermal manikin development, HEPA filter forensics, BSL-3 biocontainment systems
