Steven D Lubar is the George L. Littlefield Professor of American History at Brown University, with affiliations in American Studies, History, and the History of Art and Architecture. He has held leadership roles including Director of the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage (2004–2014), Interim Director (2023), and Director of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology (2010–2012). A Guggenheim Fellow (2016), Lubar’s work bridges museum studies, public humanities, and the history of technology. His research explores exhibition design, material culture, and digital scholarship.
Education: PhD (1983), MA (1977) in History from University of Chicago; BS (1976) in Science from MIT.
Research Interests: Museum curation, public humanities, history of technology, material culture, digital humanities, and cultural heritage. Recent projects include Inside the Lost Museum and explorations of repair as learning.
Awards: Includes Guggenheim Fellowship, Dibner Awards (1987, 1990), and Excellence in Exhibition Label Writing Award.
Teaching: Courses on museum practices, digital humanities, boatbuilding’s cultural significance, and the history of museums. Notable courses: AMST1220, AMST2650, AMST2540.
Publications: Over 90 articles and books on museum history, technology, and public humanities. Recent works include Inside the Lost Museum (2017) and contributions to Repair: Sustainable Design Futures (2022).
