Lauren Yapp is a Lecturer in Urban Studies at Brown University and Director of Undergraduate Studies. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from Stanford University (2018), an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (2010), and a BA from Harvard College (2009). Her research focuses on the socio-political dimensions of urban heritage preservation in postcolonial Indonesia, examining how colonial-era architecture and infrastructure shape contemporary debates over memory, gentrification, and urban development. She has conducted fieldwork in Jakarta, Semarang, and Bandung, exploring grassroots activism and government initiatives around heritage sites. Her current book project, Colonial Pasts, Future Cities, critiques how heritage advocacy often reinforces elite control while offering spaces for civic engagement.

Teaching includes courses on urbanism in the Global South, memory politics, and Southeast Asian studies. She also advises honors theses and leads workshops on community-engaged research. Ongoing projects investigate social media activism among Indonesian youth challenging urban policies. Affiliated with Brown’s Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology, Haffenreffer Museum, and Cogut Institute for the Humanities.
