Steven Cohen

Steven Cohen is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education and Department of History at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences. He has taught at Tufts since 1995, following two decades of high school history instruction. Cohen holds a PhD in Comparative History from Brandeis University and a BA in History from Williams College. His work extends beyond academia, including editing anthologies for PBS documentaries like Vietnam: A Television History and Eyes on the Prize, and contributing to the PBS LearningMedia website.

His research focuses on controversial historical topics such as the Vietnam War, the Holocaust, and the atomic bombings, emphasizing pedagogical approaches to sensitive subjects. Cohen has authored articles on teaching methodologies and co-edited sourcebooks for educational documentaries. He also served as a Program Associate with Facing History and Ourselves, fostering dialogue on ethical and historical issues.

Cohen's publications span historical analysis, educational resources, and interdisciplinary studies. His work bridges history and education, addressing themes like identity, race, and social justice in classrooms. Notable works include Identity, Race, and Classroom Dialogue (2018) and contributions to The SAGE Encyclopedia of War (2017).

He secured a U.S. Department of Education grant (2004–2008) for Project LOCAL, aimed at community-based historical education. Cohen actively engages with teaching practices, offering courses on curriculum design, educational theory, and historical pedagogy. His collaborations with PBS and academic publications reflect a commitment to accessible, impactful historical education.
