Steven Bowman is a Professor specializing in Jewish history with a focus on the Byzantine Mediterranean and Holocaust studies. Affiliated with the University of Cincinnati since 1981, he has held visiting roles at institutions including Cambridge University, SOAS, and Heidelberg University. His research bridges medieval Jewish communities, Byzantine interactions, and modern Greek Jewish experiences.

Research interests include Byzantine-Jewish relations, Holocaust resistance in Greece, and medieval Mediterranean religious dynamics. He has authored/co-edited over 20 books, including seminal works like Jewish Resistance in Wartime Greece and The Jews of Byzantium. His work has been optioned for film adaptation (Land of the Angels).
Grants include a $27k Fulbright-Hays Senior Faculty Research Abroad grant (2010-2011) and a Lady Davis Postdoctoral Fellowship. He co-coordinated the Jacob and Jennie L. Lichter Lecture Series at UC from 1981-2012, and organized international workshops on Holocaust studies.
Publications span encyclopedia entries, edited volumes on eyewitness accounts, and annotated translations of historical texts like Sepher Yosippon. His work frequently engages with primary sources from Greek and Hebrew archives.
