Steven Ayer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, serving as Faculty Director for Civil Engineering. He leads the Emerging Technologies Building Information Modeling Lab, focusing on leveraging augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and other emerging tools to enhance construction project delivery with a human-centric approach. His research emphasizes improving human performance through technology, spanning areas like construction management education, design quality, field communication, and facility maintenance.
Dr. Ayer holds a PhD and dual Bachelor's/Master's degrees in Architectural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. His work is funded by federal, state, and industrial partners, yielding both academic and practical contributions. Key themes include authentic learning experiences through mixed reality, bridging industry-academia gaps, and optimizing technology adoption in construction processes.
His articles consistently address AR/VR applications in safety training, communication efficiency, and educational innovation. Recent studies highlight the role of emotional engagement in decision-making and the challenges/barriers to AR implementation in real-world construction scenarios. Dr. Ayer advocates for technology that empowers practitioners rather than prioritizing innovation for its own sake.
Funding sources include federal grants and industry collaborations, enabling data-driven insights into technology efficacy. His lab actively engages in translating research into actionable practices for the AECO sector, emphasizing maintainable built environments and sustainable design education.
