Professor Steve Vucic holds the Northcott Chair of Neurology and directs the Brain and Nerve Research Center at Concord Clinical School, University of Sydney. He is a staff neurologist at Concord Hospital and senior academic with affiliations to the Brain and Mind Centre and Charles Perkins Centre. Appointed as senior lecturer in 2008, he was promoted to associate professor in 2011 and full professor in 2014 at age 42, following his doctoral thesis.
- Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences Fellow (2020)
- Doctor of Science (DSc, UNSW) for ALS research
Research Interests focus on motor neuron disease (ALS/MND), including pathogenesis, biomarker development, and clinical trials. Additional expertise spans neuroimmunology of central/peripheral nervous systems and cortical physiology/pathophysiology. His interdisciplinary approach combines axonal excitability studies, translational research, and clinical trial design for neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis.
Over 15,000 citations and a H-index of 55 reflect his impact. Key publications include 275+ manuscripts in Lancet, Lancet Neurology, Brain, and Nature Genetics, plus the textbook Practical Approach to Electromyography (2011) with Harvard collaborators.
Scientific Awards
- Gottschalk Medal (2016)
- Erica Susman Prize
- Doctor of Science (UNSW)
- Fellow of Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
Teaching & Supervision covers neurology, neuromuscular diseases, neurophysiology, motor neuron disease, and neuroimmunology. He supervises research students like Shadi EL-WAHSH studying myasthenia gravis care standards.
International Collaborations include institutions in Japan (Chiba/Tokyo Universities), UK (Oxford), and USA (Massachusetts General Hospital, NEALS Consortium) for biomarker development and therapeutic target research.
